Ayurveda Treatments for Disc Problems

A slipped disc is considered to occur due to the imbalance of the Vata element in Ayurveda. This causes a loss of equilibrium of the body. In many cases, a slipped/herniated disc or a jutting out of the cushion on which the vertebrae are seated causes severe back or leg pain and weakness of the muscles of the lower extremities. Ayurveda treatments for slipped discs are geared towards restoring the equilibrium of the vata element.

Basically, these treatments are geared towards strengthening the supporting tissues of the vertebral discs and the spinal column, release muscle spasms if any and reduce nerve compression, and nourish joints by improving the circulation thereby relieving pain.

Kativasti

This treatment method refers to the pouring of lukewarm medicated oils on the back of the patient in order to treat herniated discs for about half an hour and thereafter massaging the affected area for about 15 minutes. This procedure is repeated for five to seven days. There are no side effects for this treatment as the massage is a gentle one. The oil is maintained in a lukewarm temperature to make the massage a soothing one.

Abhyanga

For the patient undergoing Abhyanga, the patient is massaged using slow and rhythmic movements from the head to the toe for about 40 to 50 minutes. Warm and medicated oils are used for massaging the body. The body is massaged when in seven different postures by varying the pressure. Abhyanga helps to nourish bones, tissues, and ligaments.

Kizhi

This treatment involves massaging the body with concoctions made out of medicinal herbs and other healing oils. The massaging is done until the oil is absorbed by the body. This type of treatment works to improve blood circulation, reduces fatigue of the muscles, and reduces mental stress. This treatment is also good for treating herniated spinal discs and injuries of the joints.
